BSI and Its International Character
The BSI operates a non-discrimination employment policy in terms of race, nationality, etc. when recruiting research and technical staff. As a result about 50 non-Japanese researchers from over 20 different countries now work at BSI, including four non-Japanese laboratory heads (who come from Cyprus, Germany, Poland and the USA.). This figure represents approximately one quarter of the current staff, however, in it's aim to become one of the world's leading Centers of Excellence in the field of brain science research, the BSI hopes to increase the number to at least one third throughout the institute.

To this end, a number of steps have been taken to create a truly international environment and eliminate any barriers which may exist between nationalities. English is used as the common language at important meetings at the institute as well as the medium of conversation in the laboratories. About a hundred apartments are already maintained on the Wako Campus for non-Japanese staff but following the scheduled expansion of the BSI later years there is plan to construct another international accommodation facility with seventy to eighty apartments.

As BSI continues to cultivate an international atmosphere, it is hoped that more top-class researchers from all over the world will be encouraged to participate in research activities at RIKEN BSI.
